The following job is currently open at the German Embassy in Washington, DC.

The Embassy of the Federal Republic of ¾«¶«Ó°ÒµÊÓÆµ in Washington, DC, represents German interests in the United States. As such, the Embassy offers you an attractive and unique workplace. The Embassy is looking to fill a position (30-hour work week) as protocol officer/ social secretary as soon as possible.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Develop ideas for events hosted by the Ambassador and the Ambassador’s spouse
• Coordinate with contacts inside and outside the Embassy to conceptualize and execute events
• Manage invitations and guest lists
• Create seating arrangements according to German and American rules of protocol
• Advise the Ambassador and Ambassador’s spouse on questions of German and American rules of protocol
• Receive and welcome guests at the Ambassador’s Residence
• Keep up to date on the current Washington social and political scene and provide necessary background for the Ambassador and the Ambassador’s spouse for their social engagements

Qualifications and Requirements:

• Completed bachelor’s degree, occupational apprenticeship, or vocational training
• Experience in event management, protocol experience desired
• Familiarity with Washington society and culture
• Excellent organizational skills, flexibility, and ability to work independently
• Excellent teamwork and social skills in an international setting, particularly in coordinating with internal and external partners in the U.S. and ¾«¶«Ó°ÒµÊÓÆµ
• Professional, diplomatic demeanor and tactfulness
• Resilience, stamina, and readiness to work special recurring, event-related hours (1-3 evenings per week and some weekends – overtime is compensated)
• Fluent English, knowledge of German desired

Pay:

Pay is based on a 30-hour week; overtime is compensated at 1.5 times the regular pro-rated hourly rate. The gross starting salary for the position is currently $4,956 per month. Depending on prior experience, the staring salary can be higher. The position will be open-ended, provided the candidate proves suited to the job during the probationary period. A one-year contract will be signed initially.

Contract terms and compensation are based on local law, as per the standard employment agreement for non-diplomatic staff at the German foreign missions in the U.S. and the corresponding pay scale.

Prior to hiring, the successful candidate will be required to show adequate health through a medical examination by the Embassy’s partner physician. In addition, a background check will be conducted. Your cooperation is required for hiring.
